Editorial policy

How content and data are produced, updated, and corrected.

Source priority

We prioritize primary, authoritative sources in this order:

  • Government & national labs: IRS (tax credit status), U.S. EIA (electricity prices), and NREL PVWatts (production modeling).
  • Established public databases: DSIRE for incentives and OpenEI/URDB for utility rates.
  • Curated fallbacks: clearly labeled representative estimates used only when live data is unavailable, always marked low confidence.

How content is updated

Electricity prices and production estimates are refreshed by automated data syncs (monthly where API keys are configured). Each data-driven page shows a freshness badge: "Current estimate" (under 90 days), "Recently updated" (90–180 days), or "Needs refresh" (over 180 days). Incentive and net-metering summaries are reviewed manually and always carry a "verify before deciding" note.

Accuracy & honesty

  • We never present fallback estimates as live facts.
  • We mark a state "needs review" rather than guess at policy we can't confidently source.
  • We show the assumptions behind every calculation.
